Why you should disable Windows Update on a show computer

Good old Windows Update! Fortunately we power up the computers long enough before the show to run lighting and sound tests and there’s no network in the hall. Tom spotted the warning message and I let Windows do its update and reboot before the show.

What if we hadn’t spotted it and the “I will shut down automatically in 5 minutes” had been hidden behind Show Cue System? Or during a quiet bit of the show it had decided it was idle and rebooted – moments before an important sound cue?

Windows sounds are disabled on that machine for good reason, but you could imagine during an important speech suddenly the Windows Shutdown sound comes over the speakers.

And what if the update had broken a driver or broken or changed sound? Even with half an hour to go before curtain up, that would have been a bit of a problem.
